Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update

What a wonderful weekend we had and a great way to start off the month and end the year. Mad props to Hello Stranger on Friday, Entrance on Saturday, Summer Darling on Sunday, and to Mike Corwin for putting together such a great and successful night for the release of Live from Little Tokyo Vol. 2. Recorded live at pehrspace last July, the album features songs from The Henry Clay People, Correatown, Master/Slave, The Soft Hands, and Mad Gregs. Check their Myspace for details on how to pick one up.

Residencies on this holiday-shortened month include David Garza at Largo, The Nightwatchman at the Hotel Cafe, Venus Infers/The Henry Clay People down at Detroit, The Watkins Family Hour at Largo, Crooked Cowboy at Mr. T's Bowl, Master/Slave at Crash Mansion, and The Binges at Spaceland... That Brooklyn band everyone's talking about APTBS makes their L.A. debut this week. Fine, but make sure to see the great local bands playing with them... Other shows this week: The wonderful Janet Klein and Her Parlour Boys continues their first Thursday residency at the Steve Allen. Midnight Movies play Spaceland. And Indie 103 gets into the holiday spirit with their "Bands in Toyland" concert featuring Spoon, Pinback, Datarock, and Sea Wolf... The show of the month is on 12/12. If you have a show on this date, fire your booking agent as you should never ever book against Björk. Ever never.

Also: Voting for Okayplayer's 2007 Music Awards has begun and once again leans more to the NYC. Oh well, locals in the running include Saul Williams, Cold War Kids, Blu, Dilated Peoples, Silversun Pickups... KCRW's Nic Harcourt unveiled his best albums of 2007, featuring L.A.'s Great Northern, Sea Wolf, and at #1, Jesca Hoop's Kismet... Spaceland on Ice is back at Pershing Square on 12/6 with Castledoor and You Me and Iowa doing triple salchows all night long... Read why Sir Blake Miller no longer thinks L.A.'s music scene is "uninspiring"... Bodies of Water is #9 on Gorilla Vs. Bear's 2007 Best of list... Tickets are now on sale for The Airborne Toxic Event's Thursday residency in January. Lineups for these nights are gigantastic and are sure to sell out early. Get them now... One of the funniest people we know, Tig Notaro, just got her own monthly at Largo. No small feat for the toughest club to book in town for over a decade. Well, beginning January 7th (and every first Monday of the month thereafter), she's putting on a variety show perhaps in the vein of Ellen's "Really Big Show" except this one will hopefully be funny. In any case, if you've got something to show off, contact Rebecca with the specifics of your talent. Meanwhile, Ms. Notaro's next show is at the Westside Eclectic on 12/12 (just heard her booking agent is now out of work).
